Amen! Thanks for sharing your story. I also recently heard from a fellow blogger on how great the Canadian plan is and that the scare tactics about it are exaggerated.

I can offer my love and sympathy. Take heart in that she loves every minute she spends with you. You are all still in the adjustment time. You will not have too many more six day weeks (or you are going to make yourself sick). Dan will learn all those little, gotta get this done before she gets home, so we can all just relax things. And that beautiful baby girl will also relax and just be happy you are around somewhere. They do grow out of the clingy phase. I have never been sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. Once they don't do it anymore, you miss it. Hang in there, this too will pass. When she is 16 and wants a boyfriend who rides a motorcycle, this will seem like such an easy time!! Love to you all, Gramma Karen

I will say that I understand the feeling that domestic foster care isn't the right choice for everyone because it wasn't the right choice for my family. The foster care organization in our county made it very clear to us that they preferred experienced parents because they felt those who had raised children to adulthood all ready were better prepared for the children in their custody. They also made it clear to us that they didn't need any more parents who were interested in foster parenting or adopting children under 5 years old who did not have severe medical needs (needing one of us to stay home 24 hours a day). Because my husband and I are first time parents who both work and who have a desire to raise a child from a young age, we listened to the comments of the local social worker and decided to pursue another avenue.

Also, I'm not sold on the Hague Convention. I have just watched a number of agencies who have had ethical issues in Vietnam just receive their Hague accredidation. All the Hague is going to do is make it harder for some of the smaller ethical agencies to operate. The process is rather expensive and is aimed at the operations of a larger agency. While that means some of the larger agencies with good reputations are being accredided, it also means that some of the smaller agencies (like ours) who have amazing reputations will be unable to continue helping to build families through adoption while some of the larger agencies with less than ethical reputations in the international world (with large numbers of previous NOIDS or employees who have been kicked out of countries for human trafficking) are apparently being approved. I fear that Hague will really do little to correct the situation with international adoption.
