Hello all,
Apparently, I made the announcement about our daughter too soon.
The day after accepting our referral, the US department of state announced that the Guatemalan president, Oscar Berger, had decided to cease all adoptions (even pending cases) on Jan. 1, 2008. Since we were so new to Guatemala’s program, we would be completely unable to meet this unreasonable deadline.
Luckily enough, our agency had a family who is much further along than we are and who were (as of last week) unable to adopt the child that they had planned for. They can bring the daughter referred to us home before the deadline. So, she does have a home. Even though we are heartbroken that her home won’t be our home, we are very glad than she will be coming home soon.
Where does this leave us? Because the situation with Guatemala is completely out of our control and could not be avoided, the agency that we were adopting from Guatemala through has offered to move us to their Vietnam program. I don’t want to get anyone’s hopes up unnecessarily, but it sounds like we may have a referral in the next few months. I will keep all of you posted, and I will include information on my blog as I find out.
Our journey has been long and clearly very bumpy. I’m really hoping that we are in the home stretch now, and that our dream of having a family will be a reality very soon.
Thank you for your love and support. I’m sorry for any emotional craziness that this has put anyone else through. Please wish us luck.
shoot. i am so sorry to hear this. i heard the news on Guatemala and it is all very unfortunate.
you are in my thoughts.
Oh, Alice- I’m so sorry to hear about your lost referral. Bless your hearts- You’ve been on such an emotional roller coaster lately. I wish you all the best, and hope the new VN program works out well for you. Hoping for a speedy referral, and a safe and happy adoption for you.
Blessings!
